And, speaking of New York...

This showed up on StreetsblogSF. It originates with NYCBike Maps. The video shows how New York is on the forefront of cutting-edge street design with its separated bike lanes, car-free pedestrian walk ways and plazas. If we can make it there, we can make it anywhere!

Are New York's pedestrians aware that it's a bike lane, and not a SIDEWALK?!?!

Still, I'm very happy to see that New York City is so bike-accessible. Has it always been bike-friendly?

I'm absolutely amazed at how smooth some of those streets (and lanes) appear to be, especially when compared against Bay Area streets.

I remember when we were campaigning for Prop M in San Francisco, a measure to limit new office space downtown. The slogan was "Stop the Manhattanization of San Francisco!" Now NY is the national model of a sustainable city. Who knew?

For some reason NYC likes to mix pedestrians and bikes, like on the Hudson Greenway. It's annoying for the cyclists and dangerous for the peds. If SF people are curious, all of this happened in the last few yrs. Everybody is getting used to it and most of those people you see walking in the marked bike lane are tourists.

Personally, I always avoid this stretch, too many people. I'd rather ride with traffic on quieter streets.

Dear Bikescape,
Love the podcast! I am part of a group of cyclists and teachers who are setting up an organization that will take groups of students on bicycle tours. The project promotes health, bicycling as a way of life, and education. We are applying for a grant from Pepsi to get us started. Grants are awarded by a public vote. Could you give us a shout out to direct some traffic to our site and get us some votes? Our website is still in its early stages, but we will be glad to return the favor and send people your way.
